Cultural events

Cetona hosts the biennial Cetonaverde Poetry Prize, one of the most important cultural events in Italy, which sees young writers taking part in the  poetry competition, alongside works from the great figures of Italian and international literature.

Confronto Italiano is an annual conference  where sociologists, political scientists, historians and journalists discuss various current issues, adopting the issue of the Italian Civil identity and political culture as the main theme.

Festivals and celebrations

The Festival of Bico, a sort of flatbread kneaded by hand, takes place in Piazze during the last weekend of June and the first weekend of July. The ancient tradition of this “poor bread” has been passed down by housewives of the village, with great passion and love for the land, values that are today shared by the local community and attract many visitors.

The Festival of Pastrignocchi and Cuculo takes place in Cetona between late May and early June. Pastrignocchi represents a local culinary tradition: a type of “poor pasta” that can be made quickly and is mostly consumed on weekdays. The cuculo is a simple cookie, mainly found in the southern part of the province of Siena, which cheered up the palates of tired agricultural workers.

Cetona in fiore is an annual promotional exhibition dedicated to flowers, plants and gardening items, filling the historical centre of the village with its spring colours during the holiday weekend of the 25 April.

The Corsa delle brocche is an historical race held each year during the last two weekends in July, involving the three contrade (districts) Porta Latere, Porta Castello and Porta Capperoni.
